Frequently Asked Questions

Pain manifests as a complex interplay within the intricate network of the nervous system, comprising peripheral nerves, the spinal cord, and the brain. Its origins encompass both the central nervous system (comprising the brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system, which extends throughout the body.
Acupuncture stands as a method adept at addressing neuropathic pain stemming from these neural pathways. Neuropathic pain ensues from nerve dysfunction or damage, where injured nerve fibers might relay erroneous signals to pain centers or inadequately transmit signals to prompt the brain's natural analgesic response. By precision-placing needles into specific acupoints, an acupuncturist effectively triggers nerve stimulation, thereby activating the central nervous system.

Consequently, this stimulation prompts the central nervous system to discharge various chemicals within the musculature, spinal cord, and brain. Essentially, acupuncture fosters a precise proprioceptive pathway to the brain, thereby instigating the release of endogenous pain-relieving agents known as enkephalins. Concurrently, acupuncture augments blood and oxygen circulation to the affected area, fostering tissue healing. This dual action enables acupuncture to concurrently address both the sensation of pain and the underlying injury.

Through its nuanced influence on nerve stimulation and physiological responses within the nervous system, acupuncture emerges as a multifaceted therapeutic modality capable of alleviating both the symptomatic experience of pain and fostering reparative processes within afflicted tissues.

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin. Often patients do not even feel the needle insertion. Any pain experienced is usually described as less intense than plucking a hair. Once needles are in, there should be no pain.

Acupuncture, when administered by a qualified practitioner, is a notably safe medical procedure. The use of pre-sterilized, single-use, and disposable needles contributes to the overall safety of the practice.

Herbology is a venerable empirical science with a rich history spanning millennia. Herbs serve as foundational elements in numerous Western medications, offering a gentler and more natural alternative. However, their consumption necessitates informed understanding. Our practitioners, equipped with extensive training, adeptly tailor herbal formulas to meet the unique requirements of individual patients.

During an acupuncture session, you will lie down on a comfortable table while the acupuncturist inserts thin needles into specific points on your body. You may feel a slight prick or a sensation of warmth or heaviness. You will then relax for about 30 minutes before the needles are removed. We care about your overall well being and will provide you with the guidance, knowledge, and tools needed to be healthy. Let us help you achieve optimal wellness!  We don't just help you with your current issue, we'll help you prevent future problems.

It is recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing to your acupuncture session. It is also best to avoid eating a heavy meal or consuming alcohol or caffeine before your appointment.

How to talk to your insurance company

  1. Use a speaker phone. (You may be on hold for a long time)
  2. Don’t ask “Do you cover acupuncture for X?” Rather, ask, “Under what circumstances would my policy cover acupuncture?”
  3. Ask, “Is there a restriction on the practitioner? Is a licensed acupuncturist OK?” Often they will pay for chiropractors with 100 hours of training, or for MD’s with no training, but won’t pay for L.Ac’s with over 3000 hours of training
  4. Ask, “Is there a restriction on the diagnosis treated?” Some policies will pay for some conditions and not others. Hopefully your representative will be helpful, but not all are.
  5. If BCBS says they will pay but that we are not in network, ask them if they will consider us as an out-of-network provider. They don’t let L.Ac’s in network unless there is an MD in the practice.
  6. Get the name of the rep with whom you speak and a reference number for the call.
